Make a Plan

Each adoption plan is unique and customized to fit you! We will help you as you choose an adoption plan that works best for you.

Types of Adoptions

Open

  • An open adoption in which the birthparent(s) choose the prospective adoptive parent(s). There is full disclosure of identifying information between the prospective adoptive parent(s) and the birthparent(s). All parties meet and are free to establish the level of relationship that is most comfortable for all concerned. This type of adoption generally consists of ongoing direct sharing of letters and pictures and may include periodic visits.
  • Please note: You do have the option to make a Post Adoptive Contact Agreement before relinquishments are signed with a lawyer, which will ensure the agreement is legally binding.

Semi-Open

  • As a semi-open adoption, the birthparent(s) may choose the prospective adoptive parent(s). The two families may decide to meet at the agency to agree on an adoption plan. Last names, addresses, and other identifying information remain confidential. This type of adoption generally includes ongoing sharing of letters and pictures through the agency.
  • Please note: You do have the option to make a Post Adoptive Contact Agreement before relinquishments are signed with a lawyer, which will ensure the agreement is legally binding.

Closed

  • Adoption in which the agency determines the adoptive parent(s). The parties involved have no direct contact and no ongoing communication – all information remains confidential.

Choosing the Adoptive Family

Depending on the adoption plan you choose, you have the option to select the adoptive parents. Each eligible family has completed extensive background checks, home studies, and parenting education. When you begin the adoption process, we will show you multiple prospective adoptive family profiles to consider that align with the preferences of both parties. Each family is enthusiastic about raising a child in a loving and happy home. Click here to view our waiting families.

Delivery and Medical Care

You can receive assistance with medical costs for pregnancy and the birth of your baby. Depending on your situation, we will help you apply for Medicaid, or you will receive financial support from the adoptive family. As we develop a birth plan, we will help you choose where you would like to give birth and whom you would like to be present during the delivery.

Paperwork

We will work with you to complete all the necessary paperwork and documentation to complete the adoption.

Support Throughout Pregnancy and Beyond

You will meet with a Good Shepherd Social Worker throughout your pregnancy, who will offer emotional support and guidance. We can also connect you with community resources, including assistance with prenatal care or housing as well as provide transportation to appointments. If needed, we can also help you apply for Medicaid. After the placement is complete, you can continue receiving care through support groups and counseling with a Good Shepherd Adoption Services Social Worker.

Placement

48 hours after the birth of the child, birthparents can sign documents relinquishing their parental rights. We will help your through the process and partner you with a lawyer to ensure you understand all of your rights.
