“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Theresa

Good Shepherd’s #Safe4ANight fundraiser is a good fit for our agency in many ways. It’s not flashy – you don’t need a tux or gown, no ballrooms or valets involved. It’s not expensive – no tickets or sponsorships, or requirement to invest hours of time. We just ask that our friends give what feels right to support our maternity shelter program, and maybe invite a few others to learn about our mission and give as well.

I can tell you that our team had varying levels of confidence in our ability to raise $100,000 in just 24 hours. Development Associate Julie Rudden, who had done #Safe4ANight in previous years, was her usual positive, high-energy self, assuring us all that we were totally going to get there. Walker Hill, our new Development Director, had never seen anything like what we were attempting and was cautiously optimistic. And I went into it knowing that no matter what happened, Good Shepherd could feel confident that our friends and donors will be there for us.

All of our best hopes were surpassed when, a little over 18 hours into the event, we hit our original goal. Balloons and confetti burst onto our phones as we sat in morning traffic to let us know that it was time to celebrate. (My only regret is that we weren’t all together at that moment.)

I’m proud to say we ended up raising more than $115,000 in gifts from 285 individual donors.

So now that the cheers have quieted and it is all over, we’re left to ruminate on the 2,399 nights of safety, comfort, and care we’ll be able to provide moms and babies in our Good Shepherd Maternity Shelter because of the generosity of our donors. For us, it’s about humbling ourselves before the work we do. It’s about recognizing these providential moments.

We’re thankful for the gifts we received. We’re grateful for those who participated through contributions of all sizes, in creating ripples through their circles of influence that connected us with more friends. We’re honored you chose to help us keep moms and babies #Safe4ANight.
